I've had my eye on this fixture all week. With Warrington's indifferent form and recent injuries to our two preferred half backs, I was intrigued by what the bookmakers would go for, especially taking into consideration KR's formidable start to the campaign.It's a big ask for Warrington to beat any side by 12pts these days, more so at home believe it or not......their problem over the past few years has been the inabilty to produced the goods, killer instinct if you like, against the so called the smaller clubs. In 2006, when being favourites at the Haliwell Jones Stadium, the Wires choked each and every time....

With Chris Bridge and Lee Briers out, it's hard to see Warrington having the creativity & skill to break the KR defence too often, thus being unable to pull away.

Word of caution: Many will fancy Warrington to get their stop/start season back on track on Sunday. After last year's embarrasing defeat & challenge cup exit, no team would enjoy bursting Hull KR's overinflated bubble than the Wolves.

I know that Salford havent made the best of starts but if you take their home form into consideration all is not that so. In 2006, they managed to stay within the handicaps on all 6 occasions, when they received a start at the Willows. See below....

Away from home Salford are a different proposition for all the wrong reasons, as we seen last week against the rampant Bradford Bulls. But they make the Willows a very difficult place to get a result. Although Wigan have the world class Trent Barrett in their ranks, I doubt he has played at a ground such as this.

Close one to call, but you would be a brave men to fancy the under par Warriors to cover.

My main bet of Round 5 comes in the shape of Bradford -10pts versus the Salford City Reds. Salford have bagged only one victory in the first four opening games and have been far from convincing. I see them struggling on a dry and wide Odsal surface against the Bulls gunning for top spot.

As mentionned previous, Salford are a punters dream when playing at home. Teams find it difficult to find space against them at the Willows and games are often closely fought encounters (1-10pts).

The same cannot be said when they play away from home, especially against the bigger clubs, Bradford being one of them. Their previous three visits to Odsal dont make for happy reading; bruising defeats of 52 v 6, 34 v 4, 58 v 12 means it would be a brave man to back them today.

Yet, Bradford havent been at their best thus far, despite claiming 3 wins from 4. I just feel that their back line combination of Solomona, Hape and Vainikolo (pictured) will prove too strong for the City Reds, resulting in a comfortable victory for the home side.

Hooker, Ian Henderson is starting his first match for the Bulls as a result of Terry Newton's suspension. In my opinion Henderson offers the Bulls far more in attack and would pick him infront of the thug, Newton anyday. Henderson will see today as his chance to shine at the expense of the Salford.

Well it has been an underdog backers paradise so far in Super League, but I think some sort of normality will resume tonight when Hull KR take on a full strength Leeds Rhinos side.

Firstly, well done to Hull KR thus far, they are proving lots of their early season critics wrong, winning 3 out of the first 4 games, most noticably their historical 16 v 26 win over Wigan at the JJB. A victory for the Robins tonight will leave them perched on top of the SL table.

But lets not get to carried away with ourselves. The Robins face a Leeds side, also sitting pretty on 6pts. Not much credited has been handed the way of them so far, but weather conditions and a blip in France havent helped their cause. Tonight in dry conditions I fully expect them to pick holes in the Hull KR defence with relative ease. Not to forgot Craven Park is a extremely open surface, a factor that lead to KR's success last year could ultimate prove their demise come September.

Their last home game lead to a 10 v 26 defeat against Harlequins, something Leeds will be taking much encouragement from.Looking at the line-ups, it is hard to see where Hull KR have the advantage.

The Racing Post followers have gobbled up the -8pts on Leeds, so im going to see for -10pts with a saver on the tie!Saturday evening rugby league viewing is costly for me and most other punters at the moment, so im sticking to a 2pt bet....although it's tempting to go a little higher.

Firstly, it feels rather strange to tip Les Catalans in Super League, they were a side I consistently opposed last years (so well done to them).

The Dragons have taken an encouraging 3pts from their three opening games, especially so when you consider the opposition....Hull, Wigan and Leeds, all of which you would consider top 6 material. The 3pts could and perhaps should have been 6pts after losing late to Wigan and drawing with a lacklustre Hull side. So should we now be taking the French seriously in Super League? Damn right in my opinion! They have unearthed some gems from down under this year, similar to Michael Dobson previously, and will fancy their chances against a Salford side yet to win in Super League XII.

After much hype, from myself included, The City Reds are fast becoming potential one season wonders after reaching the playoffs in the last campaign. It seems as though Karl Harrison’s new signings are gelling as quickly as super glue from the local pound shop.

The Super League XII stats so far show that after 3 full rounds of fixtures only 3 handicaps have been covered. Les Catalans are 100% (3/3) on the bookies handicaps. For those reasons I expected a handicap of +2pt/4pts, the +8pts Catalans, offered by skybet, was too good to miss.

However you should never underestimate Salford at the Willows and in the words of Nelly Furtado, all good things must come to an end. So it's only a 1pt stake.

The result could go either way, would be surprised to see Catalans lose by 8pts or more.

Recommendation – Catalans +8pts @ Skybet 1.80 (1pt)

Also going to take the Bradford Bulls with a healthy 10pts against the out of form (domestically) Saints. I sense an upset tonight......the Volcano will be on fire!!

Sorry for the quick post; I'm going to take the under points tonight in the WCC (Saints v Broncos). These sort of affairs are generally tight and low scoring with neither side willing to take too many risks, opting for the 2pts instead of the 6pts.

Furthermore, these sides have arguably the strongest defences the sport has to offer, so I dont expect to see many line-breaks or missed tackles. I expect Brisbane to just come out on top, but Saints are more than capable especially starting the match carrying the underdog tag. For that reason I would leave the handicap & match betting well alone.

The weather in Bolton tonight adds more appeal to the unders....it's dark, drizzily and overcast.....not ideal for free scoring rugby.

Former Bradford coach Brian Noble returns to Odsal for the first time since his controversial move across the Pennines to the Wigan Warriors.

Noble won’t be the only one returning to Yorkshire club, one time fan’s favourites Michael Withers and Stuart Fieldan return to face the side where they achieved so much.

But let’s not forget, there is a rugby match taking place here.

On paper, form and previous meetings between the two sides you have to fancy Bradford at home to overcome what seems to be a rather slim handicap (+4pts).

Odsal has not been a happy hunting ground for Wigan over recent years, losing their last four visits by scores of 34 v 12, 40 v 8, 38 v 12 and 34 v 6. They have had a somewhat lacklustre start to the season, whereas the Bulls defend a 100% record after 2 Rounds.

Looking at both squads it’s hard to find an area where Wigan look significantly stronger. Rumours surround Trent Barrett fitness, a tough man to replace for any side. Bradford look big and powerful in the forwards, quality in the half backs and world class throughout the back-line.

They should out muscle and out score this wayward Wigan outfit.

I’m going to take a chance on the Salford today, +8pts!

The City Reds are an appealing prospect when receiving such a start at their home ground, the Willows. However, this wasn’t always the case; in past seasons I have dismissed them as nothing more than cannon fodder for the big guns. Last season they turned a significant corner and managed a top six finish, a remarkable achievement. I believe they didn’t lose by 8pts at home during the whole of last season.

Yes they have lost Andrew Dunemann, but I think Karl Harrison has recruited extremely well this time round. They look a significantly improved side on paper. Coach, Harrison has drafted in bit hitters such as Korkidas and Edmondson, quality players in my opinion and ideal to fill up some space in the middle of the park (especially at the Willows). They have also brought Luck Dorn into the squad from Harlequins, im looking forward to seeing his link up play with Luke Robinson.

Scoring tries was Salford’s problem last term, stopping other sides from scoring them was their speciality (2nd best defence)…..yet with conditions not being perfect should suit them.

Leeds are taking a strong squad across the Pennines, handing new signings Brent Webb and Kylie Leuluai their Super League debuts. They will definitely test the City Reds credentials today but are missing their captain Jamie Peacock, a massive blow for any side.

I think the Rhinos will just sneak it, but the home side are worth a punt with an 8pt start.

The long wait is over; my first rugby league bet of 2007....let's hope it's a good one.

I'm going to keep it short and sweet...

I have to fancy Warrington with a 10pt start. Last year their strike rate of staying within a (+) handicap was exceptional (+80%) and think it will be more of the same this time round. They have recruited well (Morley, Anderson and Johnson) and seem to have a stronger depth to the squad, a factor they have previously missed.

These two sides have probably received the most hype regarding their SL chances in pre season, I just cant see either team pulling away and winning by double figures.

As I look out of my office window one thing is clear, the weather conditions this evening will prove a leveler, therefore I can't see there being many points (teams opting for the 2pts instead of the 4/6) so I'll have a dabble on the unders as well.

Despite the value of backing anytime tryscorers at paddypower (Yeaman @ 3.40), my only pre-match bet is on under 42.50pts. Never really been a player of the total points markets, but after nailing 2 from 2 recently, im feeling a tad more confident in this area.

As you know the Grand Final is the most crucial RL game in the domestic calendar over in the UK. Teams/players obviously want to win at this level, but they equally dont want to make mistakes and hand the advantage over to their opponents, this often leads to tight, defensive games that climax with a nail biting finish.

Team dont need to score tries at every opportunity, they will happily take the 2pts if offered.

Six out of eight previous Grand Finals have been low scoring affairs (scoring under 42.5pts), the two games that registered a score over that amount, did by a whisker.

It's hard to the handicap to be honest, although if I had to pick, I would side with Bradford +6pts. However the 6pts is at blue square and we all know how sharpe their rugby trader has been recently.

So what do I fancy? Again, not a market I normally venture into, but it has to be under 44.5pts at Ladbrokes (1.83). The playoff eliminators are often tight encounters and with heavy rain forcasted tonight, you really have to favour a low scoring affair.

Neither side have the speed in attack to break from deep, unlike Leeds & Saints, which would suggest battle in the forwards tonight.

Im going to go against what seems to be the general consensus and back Bradford -10pts tonight!

I have to agree with Mark Langdon, who wrote in today's Racing Post 'SALFORD get their first crack of the Super League play-offs and it is likely to be an unhappy experience when they face Bradford at Odsal this evening.'

Salford have done tremendously well to achieve what they have this season. Tipped as relegation candidates they have proved all their critics wrong, including myself. Karl Harrison has ensembled a squad together that can mix it with the best, their home and defensive records prove this.

Tonight they face a Bulls side that has been unable to put a decent run of form together all season. They have lost some big names from their championship winning side of 2005, most noticeably Brian Noble and Stuart Fielden, however I feel they still have the power and attacking prowess to put Salford's season to bed.

The City Reds arent the same threat when away from their home ground, the Willows, failing to register a single away point against any sides above them in the table. They are sometimes defensively exposed on wider surfaces and this is an area I feel Bradford's backs could have a real advantage, especially in the latter stages of the match.

The weather conditions in Yorkshire are much better than yesterday, which must also be in favour of the home side!

I wont take the -8pts at Hills because of the shortened price, so I will have a 2pt bet on the -10pts at the usual 1.90!

For the second week running, a sell out crowd of over 13,000 make their way to the Halliwell Jones Stadium today, hoping to see the home side clinch 5th spot in the league.

Salford's defeat to Harlequins yesterday has left the door wide open for the Wolves, who if they beat Saints today will clinch 5th spot and face Bradford in the first round of playoffs, a side they have a good record against having beaten then twice already this season. A defeat today will mean an away trip to in-form Leeds Rhinos, not the best tonic when on the road to the Grand Final.

Hopefully Saints have learnt from last season and won't be foolish enough to go out all guns blazing today ahead of next weeks key clash verses Hull (a victory against Hull will book their Grand Final tickets).

This is one of those games where, no matter how big the handicap is, you always have to fancy Leeds.

Bottom side, Les Catalans have found life tough on the road in their inaugural Super League season, im sure tonight is going to be no exception. I sense an air of uncertainty in their camp with many players playing their last game for the club and others unsure whether they will feature in Mick Potter’s plans for next year. Julien Rinaldi, arguably their most consistent and under-rated French player, has been dropped from the squad following his decision to join Harlequins next season. Dragon’s coach, Mick Potter, has instead decided to call up fringe players Zitter, Touxagas, Sadaoui and Khattabi to face the Rhinos tonight.

Danny, the Dragon slayer, McGuire makes his eagerly awaited return to the Leeds side after missing the last six with a shin injury. This will no doubt lift the spirits of the whole squad and supporters alike and he could be the key to stopping St Helens’ dominance of Super League XI.

Leeds need to go into the playoff rounds with lots of momentum, tonight will be the perfect chance to do so.

When talking about Castleford’s relegation fears this week, ex-Wigan coach Ian Millward said, "They will feel they are safe and their job is done". A comment that must have made every Tigers in the land reluctantly chuckle and shake their head at the same time.

The ‘job’ for the Tigers is far from ‘done’! A feeling felt throughout each and every of the 22 coach loads of Tigers’ fans travelling to the Willows tonight, hoping to spur their side on to victory and avoid a final weekend showdown against relegation rival the Wakefield Wildcats (an outcome they so desperately want to avoid).

Ian Millward, “The game is also on at the same time as Wakefield's visit to Bradford so they won't know if the pressure is back on or not.”

Utter rubbish. The pressure is definitely on, make no mistake about it. Since when has a side felt safe from relegation when it is still a possibiltiy? Castleford need one more point from their remaining two Super League fixtures to be assured safety, easier said than done with their last two games being played away from the Jungle (away vs Salford, away vs Wakefield).

Like bluesquare, I had this game down as a -10pts handicap, I a, more than happy take Castleford with a 14pts start, considering what's at stake. The City Reds, guaranteed a playoff place, have only covered a 14pt margin, at home, 5 times this year; 4 of which came in their first 4 home games of the season. They are strong at home but normally win or lose by very close margins.

I think Salford will snatch it! But will be surprised if they can stretch the Tigers out by more than 14pts.

Bottom of the league, Les Catalans have found life tough on the road in their first year competing with Europe's finest rugby league sides. Away from the comfortable surroundings of southern France they have conceded an average of 30+pts a game, picking up only 2 wins along the way. Tomorrow afternoon they travel to the north of England to face high flying Hull FC.

Hull have impressed many during the second half of the season and are many people's fancy to challenge St Helens at Old Trafford. However, its not all plain sailing just yet for the airlie birds.....they still have domestic business to attend to, in ensuring they finish in 2nd spot, allowing for an easier route to the Grand Final (the Hull players will be more than aware of their previous encounters in the playoffs).

Leeds' emphatic victory over Warrington, means it is vital Hull win tomorrow, and win well as points difference could be a factor come round 28.

Les Catalans are without the suspended Jerome Guisset, his presence and Super League experience should prove costly for the French side, who are also missing first teamers John Wilson and full-back Renaud Guigue. Hull are at near full strength, with Kirk Yeaman getting valuable field minutes after a long spell on the sidelines, I expect him to score some points tomorrow.

Revenge will be one of the sentiments echoing around the Bradford Bulls changing room, as they prepare to face their former coach Brian Noble, and player Stuart Fielden, oh and lets not forget the Wigan Warriors.

Wigan are currently on a great run of form, winning 8 of the last 9 Super League matches. However they still find themselves caught up in the relegation scrap, a victory tonight against the Bulls would secure they Super League survival, and there's no better side Nobel would want to secure it against.

It's fair to say that since Noble parted company with the Bulls, their form has dipped, especially away from Odsal. They have only won once on the road in the last 5 fixtures, which came against a coachless and struggling Wakefield side. You have to go back to Round 14 for the last time the Bulls picked up 2pts on the road.

Brian Noble and Stuart Fielden know what this Bradford side is all about. Power, accuracy and Lesley 'The Volcano' Vainikolo. I am confident Nobel will get his tactics nailed on tonight.

Wigan for me...

However, with so many old scores to settle between these two old foes, I recommend only small stakes.

The Challenge Cup final, no finer stage for players to write their name in the history books of this great sport.

Normally tight and nervy affairs, this fixture is renouned for its low scoring and dramatic last minute heros (if you needed reminding; cast your minds back to last years final).

I see today's final going slightly different to the norm, I see points and quite alot of them, mainly from St Helens. The Lancashire club start the match as 1.10 favourites and -16/20pts on the bookmakers handicap lines (hardly worth getting excited about is it?). However I just can't bring myself back Saints to cover such a big handicap on a stage like this. Why not back Huddersfield? Not wise. Yes, they have been boosted by the return of captain Chris Thorman and hooker Brad Drew, however we seen the price Leeds Rhinos paid last years final, when they risked a half fit Keith Senior.

Both finalists have quality in their back line, but Saints' size and strength up front should prove too much for the Giants to handle. I worry for Huddersfield, who have been dragged into the relegation battle after a poor run in the league, a headache they could do without, especially today.

Although I generally dont bet on tryscorer markets, I do like the look of Jamie Lyon to score at anytime with paddypower @ 1.90.

The Aussie try scoring machine wants to leave Super League on a high and there is no bigger stage over in the UK than the Challenge Cup final. He has scored regularly this season (24 tries in 30 apps), I expect him to get a piece of the action this weekend.

Bet365, skybet and vc all price this up at 1.50.

paddypower's price on Shaun Long (2.50) may also tempt punters (sky bet go as low as 1.57).

44 years is a long time to wait in Rugby League. So you would have to forgive the Huddersfield Giants for having one eye on next weekend’s Challenge Cup Final, a fixture they last played in the summer 1962.

Unlike the other finalists, St Helens, Huddersfield are looking currently looking over their shoulders at the relegation dog fight, and are in serious danger of becoming prime candidates for the drop. Again, unlike Saints, John Sharpe has been forced into fielding semi-strong squad to face the in-form Wigan Warriors at the JJB.

Wigan, whose shock win away to Leeds Rhinos last weekend eased their relegation fears, will be eager to score big tomorrow night and leap frog the Giants in the table. Bookmakers are asking the home side to make up around 20pts (was 16pts earlier in the week), a fair handicap, but one the Warriors can cover, especially considering their recent form winning 7 out of their last 8 Super League fixtures.

Huddersfield’s semi-strong squad is missing familiar faces such as Paul Reilly and playermaker Chris Thorman. Brad Drew, the Giant’s most influential and ever present player this season, has also been ruled out. Not only will they miss the hooker’s creativity and workrate, but it’s extremely difficult for a team to adjust and adapt when missing a key player for the first time, so late on in the season. Brad Drew and Huddersfield will be the perfect example of this.

Huddersfield’s forward pack is still strong (as is Wigan’s with Paleaaesina’s clearance to play) and could cause problems if they are allowed to pick up momentum. However one has to seriously wonder where will the tries come from for the Giants. They are obviously light in the backline, calling up unknowns such as teenage half-back Tom Hemingway and 20-year-old winger Bolu Fagborun.

Comfortable home victory for me!

John Kear, along with every Wakefield fan and player alike would have been left with their heads in their hands after Wigan’s shock win over Leeds, on Friday night.

Harlequins’ narrow victory over the Bradford Bulls just added insult to injury for the Wildcats, who are now bookies firm favourites for the drop!

It’s now or never for the Yorkshire club, who find themselves rooted at the foot of the table along with relegation exempt Les Catalans. Nothing else but a victory from tonight's will suffice for the Wildcats, especially considering the remaining fixtures they have left to play (Leeds, Bradford, Saints); not what the doctor ordered when fighting an uphill battle for Super League survival.

Les Catalans first season in Super League has generally gone well, they have competed hard and should improve in seasons to come. However, in recent weeks, they have somewhat gone off the boil, suffering some heavy defeats along the way. Some would say tired bodies and tired minds, especially in such an inexperienced squad.

Bookmakers see this one as close affair, giving the French side an 8 point start, not really a big margin considering what’s at stake for Wakefield, and, well lets face it, what’s not at stake Les Catalans. The handicap also seems a tad generous considering the away form of the French side, who have found their travels to the UK rough and tough, picking up only two wins in the earlier rounds.

As for team news; Monty Betham and Ned Catic are both suspended for Wakefield, after they were sent off last week against Castleford, but Wakefield’s main men are all in the frame to play, big performances are needed from every one of them from now until the end of the season. With players like Rooney, Tadulala, Jefferies, Korkidas and Solomona, you have to ask yourself why are theyfighting relegation………..

The majority of rugby league fans will be cheering the Wildcats on tonight...…..myself included! ;)

Another infamous week in the Warriors camp after being deducted 2pts for breaching the salary cap during last years campaign, the Lancashire club now find themselves in the midst of the basement battle again, a place they thought they have seen back of, until now.

Wigan's confidence rocked? One would certainly think so!

Tomorrow they cross over the Pennines to face their old Yorkshire rivals Leeds Rhinos, a daunting task to say the least.

After losing 4 games on the bounce some would argue that there has never been a better time to play the Rhinos, who are without their marksman Danny McGuire. However they have not been far off the mark in the last two Super League games, narrowly losing to league leaders Saints and Hull, certainly no disgrace.

Have some bookmakers over reacted to Leeds’ semi plight in recent weeks, by only giving up 8pts against a team fighting for Super League survival?Will be interesting to see how Wigan’s key powerhouse, Stuart Fielden, fares against ex-Bradford teammate Jamie Peacock, no love lost one imagines. Fielden, who has managed to recover from an injury last week, will also be up against fellow GB prop Jamie Thackray, what a clash of the heavyweights that is sure be.

Thackray, along with Kiwi test center Clinton Toopi, will be making his home debut for the Rhinos.

32pts is what the Rhinos score on average at Headingley, they will get close to that total tomorrow (if weather is good) despite McGuire not playing. Wigan may cross the line a couple of times (3 max), but Leeds can more than match Wigan up front in the pack and have the skills of Sinfield, Walker and Burrow in the backs to unlock the Warriors’ defence.
